What to Expect from a Jackson River Fishing Trip
The Jackson Tailwater from Gathright Dam downstream to the Town of Covington is one of only two cold water release trout fisheries in Virginia. Wild Brown Trout and wild Rainbow Trout are found throughout the 18 mile stretch of the river. This is an incredible fishery with wary wild fish to challenge even the most highly skilled fly angler.
November to March
By late November the Brown Trout spawn is complete and they are looking for big meals to regain weight. Streamer fishing is productive in all flows and particularly good when flows are above 400cfs. Indicator or Euro Nymphing is also very productive.
April to June
This is the best time of the year to find consistent flows above 300cfs. Good Caddis hatches along with decent numbers of Mayflies and Midges provide dry fly opportunities while streamer and nymph fishing continue to be productive.
July to October
Flows are generally very consistent with extremely clear water conditions. Dry Droppers and small nymphs are usually the most productive. Euro style nymphing is also very effective during this time frame.
