What to Expect from a Shenandoah River Fishing Trip
Our float trips on the South Fork of the Shenandoah River offer the opportunity to target a vibrant population of Smallmouth Bass on one of Virginia’s fabled fisheries. Our trips focus on the sections of the Shenandoah River beginning at the confluence of North River and South River at Port Republic continuing downstream through the Towns of Elkton and Shenandoah on through to Luray. Smallmouth Bass from 10”-14” are plentiful and there are solid numbers of trophy class Smallmouth Bass from 16”-20” as well. We offer both fly fishing and conventional gear fishing on these trips, making them a great way to entertain a family outing or group of friends.
March and April
Targeting pre-spawn trophy Smallmouth with both fly and conventional gear. Anglers should be experienced and willing to put in maximum effort to take advantage of limited shots at larger Smallmouth feeding up prior to spawning.
May and June
Prime water temperatures have the Smallmouth Bass putting on the feedbag. Anglers of all skill levels can take advantage of numerous opportunities throughout the day. Poppers, Frogs and Topwater lures will be effective.
July to October
Hotter days and often lower water levels make this a great time to sight fish for larger Smallmouth Bass on shade lines with annual Cicada’s and Damselflies being the main food sources on the surface. Fly anglers should be able to make accurate cast from 30’ to 50’ to entice these wary fish.
November to February
Colder weather will concentrate the Smallmouth into their winter habitats leaving much of the river barren but providing a great opportunity for conventional jig fishing and some opportunities for bigger smallmouth on larger streamers and crayfish patterns.
