What to Expect from a South River Fishing Trip
The South River, is a spring-fed, small river flowing north though the City of Waynesboro. Our South River trips are the perfect way to begin your fly-fishing journey, sharpen your skills with more advanced techniques, or just enjoy a pleasant day on the water with our highly experienced guides. The primary areas that we target are the Fly Fishing Only water near Lyndhurst and the Catch and Release Area alongside the South River Greenway in Waynesboro. Stocked and holdover Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Brook Trout and Tiger Trout are our primary targets with the occasional wild Rainbow Trout or Native Brook Trout. This is a great trip for a group activity such as corporate retreats, groups of friends, or family gatherings.
March to June
The South River shows off its best hatches of the year with Caddis, Craneflies, Sulfurs, BWO’s, and Midges. Double nymph rigs and dry droppers work best in normal or lower flows with streamers and larger nymphs producing better in higher flows. Full or Half-Day trips are both available.
July to September
Lower flows and fewer hatches create more technical fishing with terrestrial such as ants, beetles, and crickets becoming primary patterns along with small nymphs and midge larvae. Early mornings are the best fishing and half-day trips are recommended. End of August into September there is limited availability for evening trips targeting the Hexagenia hatch. These evening trips will begin at five and end at dark for the standard half-day rate.
October to February
Cooler days and fresh stockings from both Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources and Shenandoah Valley Trout Unlimited provide plenty of opportunities for good catch rates on nymph rigs and small streamers. A half or full day South River Trip is a great gift idea for Christmas as well.
